My real brother, not my half-brother who's a douchebag, hit some black ice Friday night and smashed his car into a tree...he's ok and amazingly his car is fairly ok all things considered...Remember kids there is no such thing as driving too slow when it's icy! and my brother says he wasn't going all that fast in this, speed limit on the road he was on was 45 mph and knowing he drives like a grandma he reports he was going no faster than 40 when he lost control, and on appearances the roads were dry...of course that's the danger of black ice...
I'm figuring about $1500-$2000 in damage...it starts, the radiator is smashed, the fan is gone...need a new bumper, bumper cover, hood, windshield, headlights, grille, fog lights, radiator support bracket, air bag and steering wheel..but other than that, looks to be in good shape...I think I can save this one. |

Nope...need to replace the passenger side engine mount bracket, and since it's at 100,000 miles might as well change the timing belt while I'm in there. Then I have to reconnect the power steering, air conditioning, radiator, radiator fan, ac fan, headlights, bumper, fog lights, grill, hood, hood latch, fenders and fender wells, then paint the hood, bumper and passenger side fender and then it'll be done... |

Update...so I had to get a new engine for it. Which I know what you're thinking...MY GOD THAT MUST HAVE BEEN EXPENSIVE. I found an engine at the junkyard, 20,000 less miles, with a 6 month warranty, $400! Man did I get lucky! |

Well, that car retails for $6500, I'm about $2500 into it on repairs, plus the engine I had to put in has less miles on it. So essentially, in the end, I'm getting a better car out of it for less money. |

OK so yesterday it was super humid and compeltely impossible to really work, I only got one headlight in...
But today was much nicer and I got alot done, the headlights work, the wiper fluid pump works, turn signals work, there's still an antifreeze leak, I have to put in the airbags, get a new battery and new windshield still, also the bumper is only held on by two bolts, so I have to take care of that, but I really wanted to see how it's coming along...
Almost there! Rock and fuckin roll! |

In case anyone's wondering, the airbag computer for the 2003 Mitsubishi Galant is under the center console near the firewall and can be accessed by simply moving the carpet out of the way...I learned the hard way after taking out the entire dashboard, good news, I can take off the dashboard in a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant and put it back in without any problems. |
